<b>#1: Start Fresh</b>
<br/>
To begin, you need to strip down your bike to the bare essentials, which basically means just the frame. No cables, brakes, etc. Things like the bottom bracket and cranks can be left on if you don't have the tools to remove them but you just want to be very careful later so they don't get in the way. Also, you can remove any head badges at this step if you plan on replacing them or swapping them out during the rebuild.

After using masking tape to cover up things like the bottom bracket cavity, applying a strong, high quality paint stripper from your local home improvement store will usually take the majority of the paint off pretty easily. Be sure to create a clean, ventilated work area with enough space to move around. A drop cloth is never a bad idea either. Neither are gloves.
<br/>
<br/>
Follow the instructions on the paint stripper, but usually it will start working within a few minutes and you can start to see the paint bubbling up. Feel free to go at it with some steel wool or a wire brush to get the tough spots because you want to get it absolutely clean; no paint and primer left anywhere, especially around any welded joints, etc.

After some quality elbow grease it should start to look like this:

<b>#2: Prep For Paint</b>
<br/>
At this point, you can either take your bike to get it professionally powder coated at an auto shop or you can go it alone. To continue working on it yourself, you'll need to prep the frame for primer and then paint.
<br/>
<br/>
A good degreaser (not the same kind used on your drivetrain) will go a long way to clean and prep the frame for primer. This step is important because if the primer doesn't adhere properly then every paint layer after that will suffer.

Follow the instructions on the degreaser and be sure to use clean towels and don't touch the frame with your bare hands afterwards so that the oils from your hands don't contaminate it. Again, gloves are your friend.

<b>#3: Apply the Primer</b>
<br/>
The can will instruct you how to best apply the primer. You will want to be sure to apply in light even coats to get the best results. Rather than using a bike stand which requires you to clamp part of the frame to the stand, rigging up a coat hanger or rope looped through the head tube can allow you to suspend the frame. This way, the whole frame is accessible at once and you can easily move around it as you apply the primer.

Be sure to use masking tape again to cover up any metal lugs or components that are still exposed. You only want to get primer on the frame.

<b>#4: Paint Time</b>
<br/>
Now comes the fun part. Paint and top coat. I used automotive lacquer from Advance Auto Parts and it comes in a rattle can very similar to spray paint. It's a little more serious than spray paint, but it operates in much the same way.

If you're feeling creative you can use some more masking tape and stencils to section off the frame into different colored areas. If you're working with big sections of the frame at once, you can use masking tape and newspaper to cover up the part of the frame that you don't want errant paint spray to reach.
<br/>
<br/>
Get creative with it. After all, one of the perks (and one of the reasons why you're probably doing this) is that you get the chance to create a fully custom frame unlike anything that's available in your local bike shop, online, or...anywhere.

Keeping with the "original" theme, why not throw in some special design features that only you know about? Things like your signature or a defining logo in hidden spots on the frame will make it that much more of a truly custom job. I hid a little design on the top portion of the fork, for example. Once this is greased up and the bike is assembled, no one will ever see this again unless it's taken apart so this little feature is just between you and the bike.

Once all of your paint coats are finished, it is time to add a clear protective top coat in the same way. There's different ones out there so try to find the most durable one that you can. When you buy the automotive-grade lacquer you will most likely see cans of clear top coat nearby. You can apply this in a few coats, according to the manufacturer's instructions. I ended up applying about 3 coats of this stuff just to be safe, but keep in mind that a bike with no scratches has no character and isn't really any fun. After all, who wants to be worried all of the time about leaning his bike against a bike rack, riding in the rain, or beating the frame up a bit over the years?

<b>#5: Put the Frame Together and Hit the Road!</b>
<br/>
Whether you do this step yourself or take it to a shop, make sure that it's done right by a mechanic that you trust. An improperly built bike doesn't do any favors for you as well as fellow riders, drivers, and pedestrians who share the road with you. Do it right the first time because, after all, you already spent so much time to work on the frame.
<br/>
<br/>
A few little tips include using a product like <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Progold-Steel-Frame-Protector-8-Pounds/dp/B008VQ9N6C">Frame Saver</a> for steel frames before you begin assembly (tip courtesy of <a href="http://www.aerotechdesigns.com">Evan</a>, Aero Tech Designs' Creative Director). They say products like this go a long way to preserve your frame and what's the risk in spending a couple bucks now to save yourself a lot more in the future? That is, assuming that you plan on riding this setup for a while.

Another little trick to keep water, crud, and other undesirables away from the moving parts of your bottom bracket involves a small piece of cut plastic from your recycle bin. Once you get the sizing down to allow enough horizontal room between the fixed and removable cups of your bottom bracket, you can roll the plastic piece into a tube a place it inside before assembling the bottom bracket. This will help to keep unwanted elements from finding their way into the seat tube, down tube, chainstays, etc. and making their way down to the bottom bracket, bearings, and lubrication.

You set out to start an exercise program with the best of intentions. Over spending on a gym membership? Check! A trip to the mall for new running shoes and athletic apparel? Check! You may even make it through a few weeks without missing so much as one workout. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way you hit a bump in the road that knocks you off your path to healthy living. Life tends to get in the way sometimes and kids, work, illness or injury can make it difficult to get back into a routine. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"></div><br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">If you have lost your way and are looking to make your health a priority, consider these tips as you press reset, re-evaluate, and refocus on your health. </div><br />
1. <strong>Set your Goal.</strong> Ask yourself what you are trying to achieve. There are numerous benefits that come with exercise and healthy living, but what are you working towards? For me personally, exercise is my passion. I use exercise, in various forms, to improve my overall level of fitness as I prepare for and compete in triathlon and endurance competitions. However, for others, exercise may be the means by which they stay healthy enough to coach their child’s sports team. <br />
<br />
It doesn’t matter if you are an athlete or an average Joe, a gym rat or a beginner, if you do not a goal you will never truly achieve anything. Take a moment to consider what you are working towards and what you are willing to do to make that vision a reality. <br />
<br />
2. <strong>Set a Timeline.</strong> Setting a date by which you intend to reach your goal, and creating a plan that will allow you to obtain it, will help you prioritize your responsibilities and stay focused on success. Be realistic when you create your timeline and include possible roadblocks you could encounter along the way. Then, place your timeline somewhere you will see it each day, like the refrigerator door, so it can serve as a constant reminder of what you are working towards. <br />

3. <strong>Devise a Plan:</strong> Prioritize your schedule to be sure you are making time for your workouts. Identify days and times when you will be able to make it to the gym or head out for a run. Consistency will be what transforms a chore into a habit. <br />
4. <strong>Be Prepared</strong>: Consider what type of clothing and equipment you might need as you begin your exercise regimen. If you are taking up walking or running, it is a good idea to visit a local running store to get properly fitted for shoes. If you are thinking about bicycling for exercise, assess your interest with a spin class at your local fitness center before going through the trouble of purchasing a bike, helmet, and car rack. <br />
5. <strong>Be Flexible</strong>: If you become uninterested in your workouts or lose motivation, reassess your goals or try a new activity. Consider joining a running club or a master’s swim team. Try working out with friends or entering a local sporting event or league to help increase motivation. <br />
6. <strong>Track your Progress:</strong> Consider keeping an exercise journal to record your workouts. Tracking your progress will help you monitor your goals, which allows you to see when you are making improvements or if you need to increase your exercise duration, frequency, or intensity to continue improving. <br />

The first day, weeks, and month are often the most difficult. Do not down play your accomplishments along your journey towards a healthier lifestyle. If you’re willing to be flexible and understanding, we will do our best to help you find the perfect jersey or pair of bike shorts.<br /><br /><b>Q. What is the difference between your shorts?</b><br />A. We offer a wide variety of bike short styles to satisfy even the most challenging of customer desires. Our website, aerotechdesigns.com, offers a lot of information on every product that we sell. There, you can see pictures, descriptions, and testimonials aimed to make your purchasing decision easier. At Aero Tech Designs, we specialize in offering streamlined bicycling clothing in a wide variety of sizes and colors. We recommend that your shorts fit close to your skin without squeezing anything to the point of discomfort. If your shorts are too tight, the fabric tends to stretch obscenely and the shorts do little to improve comfort while riding. If the shorts are too loose, they tend to fall down around the waist (Not very attractive while riding!) and are unable to provide the compression necessary to improve your ride. While these are good guidelines to follow, please be aware that a good fit is up to one person- YOU. When you get your shorts, try them on (with appropriate under garments, of course) and walk around. Make sure that nothing is pinching or squeezing. Make sure that you’re comfortable, as that is the point of wearing bike shorts.<br /><br /><b>Q. How do I figure out my size?</b><br />A. Most of our products have size charts on the product pages. We recommend that you measure yourself with the help of a partner. You can use a tape measurer or a piece of string (which is then measured with a tape measure). Be sure to read the size charts carefully to ensure you take the correct measurements. If you have any questions about our size charts or require a different measurement of a garment, feel free to send us an email or give us a call.<br /><br /><b>Q. I fall between sizes, should I go up or down?</b><br />A. We manufacture many of our more popular products in our factory in Pennsylvania. Because of this, we are able to make our products to the exact size charts featured on our website. If you happen to fall between sizes, it is best to evaluate to which size you are closer. If you feel comfortable tightening that belt an extra notch on a good day, you will probably be fine with the smaller size. We recommend looking at the sizes of other exercise apparel that you own. Remember, these are spandex shorts- if they’re not snug, then they don’t fit. If you call in to ask us this question, we simply cannot give you a definite answer. Each body type has its own unique shape that we are unable to visualize through a phone. If you are really unsure as to which size to buy, we recommend that you purchase both sizes. You are then able to try both pairs to find the perfect individual fit. Our return policy makes it easy to return the pair that doesn’t fit.<br /><br /><b>Q. Of what material are your bike shorts made?</b><br />A. All of the bike shorts that we manufacture are made up a spandex/nylon blend fabric. This is to provide compression to soothe muscles as well as close to skin comfort. Please see our individual product pages for exact spandex/nylon percentages.<br /><br /><b>Q. How do your jerseys fit?</b><br />A. Our jerseys are cut with the cyclist in mind. Therefore, they have a very streamlined design that falls close to your body. They also run a little longer than other types of shirts so that they extend down the back while sitting in the cycling position. These are certainly not your standard t-shirts. It is a good idea to consider going up a size to compensate for the narrow fit. For the best fit, though, go by the measurements on our size charts.<br /><br /><b>Q. How do I find my size in gloves?</b><br />A. Measure your hand completely around the widest part then compare that measurement to our size chart. The gloves that bear the Aero Tech Designs name are unisex. The gloves that we distribute, such as Descente or Campagnolo, may come in male or female varieties.
